Product update Schunk's robust high-performance swivel unit
At Motek 2018, Schunk presents, alongside other solutions, the Schunk SRM high-performance swivel unit.

Compared to the pneumatic swivel units already on the market, this module with its high power density is said to convince customers with its as yet unique combination of high torques and high moments of inertia with short swivelling times, while simultaneously offering a large central bore, robust bearings, and a lean interference contour. In developing this high-performance module, Schunk made use of the latest simulation technologies, which also covered, for the first time, reaction forces, pressure curves, impact velocities, kinetic energies and drive energies.
The basis of this robust power packet is provided by a new kind of damper, special piston seals, and a Viton/FKM seal. The swivel module is therefore also suitable for use in environments with aggressive media. The pre-tensioned bearings, with zero play in both axial and radial directions, enable it to deal with particularly high moments and transverse forces.
The dampers, mounted inside, are present, so usually only the throttles have to be adjusted during commissioning: then it is ready to go. If the internal shock absorbers have to be changed, both the swivel angle and the damper stroke adjustment remain fixed, so maintenance can be carried out particularly quickly.
The Schunk SRM enables installations with smaller dimensions, shorter cycle times, greater precision and longer service lifetimes. The high power density provides the preconditions for especially compact and simultaneously economical solutions. The consistently modular construction of the swivel unit guarantees made-to-measure design. The large central bore accommodates pneumatic lines and pre-confection cables with moulded connectors. Even more comfort is available using the pneumatic or electrical media through-feed: if the pneumatic media through-feed is used, the large central bore is left completely free; with the electrical media through-feed, on the other hand, the sensor cables can be plugged directly into the module. In this case, colour coding of the connectors simplifies commissioning and allocation of the signals. If, despite taking all precautions, the cable should break, it is also possible to replace individual cables without replacing the entire media through-feed. As a first step, this high-power swivel unit will be available in the sizes 14, 16, 25 and 40.
