Germany – Makerbot, a subsidiary of Stratasys, has won the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019 with its Makerbot Method Performance 3D Printer.

Germany – The leading 3D printing company Makerbot proudly announced winning the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019 with its Makerbot Method Performance 3D Printer.

This coveted accolade, awarded for products that feature an outstanding design, was selected from over 5,500 products across over 55 countries. This year, the jury awarded the Best of the Best in 48 categories to 80 products, which actually is only 1.5% of the submissions.

Established some 60 years ago in 1955, the international competition has a rigorous selection process, where a competent expert jury from the fields of product design, communication design and design concepts evaluates the entries on criteria such as the level of innovation, functionality, formal quality, longevity and ergonomics.

Coming back to the wining product, the Method Performance 3D Printer was first launched in December 2018. According to the company, Method is the first performance 3D printer that bridges the gap between desktop and industrial 3D printing, bringing features that were previously only available on industrial 3D printers to professionals at a significantly lower cost. The printer’s industrial features control the 3D printing process to deliver a high level of precision, reliability and dimensional accuracy.

The Method industrial and UX design was led by Mark Palmer, Vishnu Anantha and Andrew Askedall.

“We wanted the design of Method to showcase the synergy between MakerBot’s heritage in desktop 3D printing and the industrial 3D printers of our parent company Stratasys,” explains Anantha. He also noted that at the same time, the hardware had also to look sleek and futuristic, reflective of the new technology within.

Makerbot CEO Nadav Goshen adds: “We’re thrilled to receive such a prestigious and exciting industry award.” Goshen explained that making industrial 3D printing accessible requires affordability and a seamless user experience. Method was developed by a small, focused design team, who thought systemically about the entire 3D process, from pixels through to plastic. Goshen: “This is the beginning of an exciting journey for performance 3D printing.”

The award will be presented at the Red Dot Gala in Essen, Germany, on 8 Juli 2019.
