Mapal New cutting materials series for the milling of iron castings
Editor: Susanne Hertenberger
MAPAL offers a wide portfolio of ISO tools for milling. A cutting materials series was developed especially for the milling of iron castings, which covers the complete spectrum of iron casting materials - GJL, GJV and GJS.
MAPAL has developed new cutting materials for the milling of all iron castings.

Initial results indicate that in addition to a conspicuous increase in shelf-life, and therefore, increase in economy, the new cutting materials offer faster cutting speeds resulting in maximum productivity. The cutting materials series is based on the newly developed hard metal substrates. The texture of the hard metals was modelled in such a way that they yield an optimum ratio between tenacity and resistance to wear and tear.
Intelligent layer combination
The cutting materials series contains three PVD-coated hard metals and two CVD-coated types. The PVD coating consists of an optimized TiAlCrN with refined texturing of the layer structure, through which an optimum ratio between tenacity and hardness/resistance to wear and tear results. The CVD coating is based on an MT-TiCN with alpha-Al2O3 top layer. This layer combination yields high wear and tear resistance as well as a good temperature consistency.
A special post-treatment was developed for the PVD coating as well as for the CVD coating, which ensures an extremely smooth surface, and therefore, guarantees an optimum chip flow. This reduces the tribo-chemical wear and tear to a minimum. In the CVD coating, the post-treatment adjusts the internal stress condition of the layer in a target-oriented manner, so that the cutting edge is stabilised or the tenacity of the cutting material is enhanced.
The optimum cutting material for the milling of iron casting materials is therefore available - from dry- right up to wet processing as well as for the most different of use cases or machine conditions.
