The Hanover Fair is owned and organized by Deutsche Messe AG (DMAG), which is an official partner of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Held on the Hanover fairground in Hanover, Germany, the first Hanover Fair took place in 1947 in an undamaged factory building in Laatzen, south of Hanover, by an arrangement of the British military government in order to boost the economic advancement of post-war Germany.

The first fair was colloquially known as Fischbrötchenmesse (fish sandwich fair) due to the exemptions in food rationing for the fair at that time. It turned out to be really successful and was therefore repeated on a yearly basis, contributing largely to the success of the Hanover fairground in replacing the then-East German city of Leipzig as the new major fair city for West Germany.

In 2016, through a strategic partnership between the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Commercial Service, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, SelectUSA, the U.S. Embassy in Germany and Deutsche Messe, the USA will be the official Partner Country for the fair. To highlight the U.S. commitment to enduring economic ties with Germany, President Obama will also be attending the opening ceremony on the 24th of April.

In fact, President Obama will be the first sitting U.S. President in history to participate in Hanover Fair, exhibiting what a unique year 2016 will be. The U.S. companies will highlight their leadership in advanced manufacturing, energy efficiency and production, cutting-edge production engineering, smart tech and education, among other fields.

Furthermore, the main product categories at the fair will include energy, global business and markets, industrial automation, industrial start-ups, and research and technology, among others.

If you are still wondering whether or nor to attend this year’s Hannover Fair, here are some other important facts that may help you make your decision:
