umati (universal machine tool interface) is the brainchild of VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association). It is a universal machine tool interface which is based on an OPC UA companion specification. OPC UA is considered to be the most ideal communication platform for different industrial devices due to its open data model. umati is capable of realising specific mapping from customers or manufacturers and also carrying out transformation of parameters through standardised configurations.

The umati project was initially announced in 2017 at EMO Hannover following which 17 companies joined the team namely Chiron, DMG MORI, Emag, GF Machining Solutions, GROB-WERKE, Heller, Liebherr-Verzahntechnik, Pfiffner, Trumpf, United Grinding Group, Beckhoff, Fanuc, Heidenhain, Rexroth, Siemens, and ISW – University Stuttgart.
