The German Aerospace Center (DLR) will present its research at two stands of Hannover Messe 2018. One of them was named 'Taking energy further' and DLR will be showing here how a functional coupling of sectors can contribute to the Energy revolution.

One of the main attractions of the stand: The HY4. It is the first four-seater passenger aircraft worldwide to be driven only by a hydrogen fuel cell/battery system. This research aircraft is thus the path-breaker for passenger air traffic without noise, soot particles and carbon dioxide, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) informs. The exhibit at the fair booth is a model of the passenger aircraft on the scale of 1:4.
Only water as waste product
The powertrain developed for the aircraft consists of a hydrogen reservoir, a low-temperature hydrogen fuel cell, and a high-performance battery. The fuel cell converts the energy of the hydrogen into electrical energy. The only resulting waste product is water. With the resulting electricity, the electric motor drives the plane’s propeller. The lithium ion battery on board provides additional electricity during the take-off stage and in climbing.
If the hydrogen needed for the fuel cell is produced by electrolysis with electricity from renewable energies, the HY4 flies completely emission-free.
