Smart city Copenhagen: World’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025

Smart city projects have been initiated in many parts of the world but Denmark is one country that has been making significant progress constantly. Right from incorporating smart digital technologies to collaborating with government agencies, research institutions as well as local and international companies, the petite country is showing the world how it’s done.

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark has attracted eyeballs for its innovative and sustainable action plans. The small city aims to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025, and Denmark is optimistic about becoming fully independent of fossil fuels by 2050. This seems pretty much possible for Copenhagen as it’s dominated with greenery and is considered to be one of the best cities for cyclists. Localities use their cycles for almost everything – riding to work, getting the groceries, dropping the children to school, shopping, and so on. Everyone owns a bicycle in Copenhagen!

Adding to this, the city has also tested smart technologies to optimise its resources and use data to solve the city’s existing problems. This includes sensors that monitor water, air, noise, weather, waste and condition of sewer systems. Tourists will be offered free Wi-Fi, vacant parking spaces will be identified in real time, data regarding the usage of energy in buildings will be gathered and then optimised in real time, traffic is monitored and will then be managed in real time thus, reducing traffic jams and CO2 emissions, people’s movements will also be recognised and the information will be used to optimise resources, in city planning and security.

Copenhagen Solutions Lab

Copenhagen Solutions Lab is the brain centre for rolling out numerous smart city initiatives. The city authorities works with domestic, global and start-up companies as well as research and knowledge institutions to explore innovative ideas and solutions to the existing challenges in the city.

Living labs

In Denmark, there are other smart projects too that are active. For instance, Vinge, one of the largest town development areas with an area of 370 hectare is being transformed into a sustainable town of the future. Once complete, the city of Vinge will comprise of residence spaces for 20,000 people, commercial spaces, an S-train station, large business areas and advanced infrastructure. With the usage of digital technologies, the city aims to optimise its resources and enhance its surroundings.

DOLL (Danish Outdoor Living Lab) is another innovative project initiated by Denmark. Known as Europe’s leading living lab for intelligent lighting and smart city services, the project aims to test and showcase innovative solutions for future smart cities. Many global companies visit this living lab to get inspiration for developing future smart cities in their respective countries.

In terms of geographical space, Denmark may be small as compared to the other major countries undertaking smart city projects but with its innovative thinking it demands attention on the world stage.
